How does it work?
Scientists are not sure why or how it works to grow hair. Minoxidil was originally developed as a blood pressure medication, that was found to cause hair growth as a side effect! This discovery led to the marketing of Minoxidil as a hair restoration product.
We do know that Minoxidil dilates blood vessels. It promotes hair growth several ways:
- Increases blood flow which improves delivery of oxygen and nutrients to the follicles
- Reactivates hair follicles to move from the resting phase to the growth phase.
- Prolongs the active growth phase which creates longer, and more hair strands.
- Widens the hair follicle which creates thicker strands of hair, and reverses miniaturization of hair follicles which is the hallmark of hereditary hair loss.
Studies have shown that Rogaine can effectively It works for 2 out of 3 men, and is most effective when the man is under the age of 40. And when it does work, it takes up to four months to see results, and will not likely grow back all the hair that has been lost. It only works if you use it indefinitely to maintain regrowth.
What are the side effects?
Redness, itching, dryness, flaking and scalp irritation. But this is rare. These side effects are more common with 5% solutions.
How well does it work?
It has been clinically shown to regrow hair and improve hair density in 90% of 10 men, and over 80% of women. Patients may not experience hair growth for the first four months or more with the 2% solution, and 2 months or more when the 5% solution is used. Hair loss will recur within 3-4 months after the treatment is discontinued.
